Penn Fencing Celebrates 50 Years of Craftsmanship and a New Chapter in Employee Ownership

In 1976, a small fencing company opened its doors in Butler, Pennsylvania. Nearly five decades later, that company has grown into one of Western Pennsylvania's most trusted names in fencing, railing, and decking. Now, as Penn Fencing prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026, it is marking the milestone with a move that secures its future for generations to come.

Today, we're proud to share that Penn Fencing is officially 100% employee-owned.

A Fencing Legacy Rooted in Family and Community

Founded by Larry Galbreath, Penn Fencing began with a handful of employees and a focus on wood, agricultural, and chain-link fencing. Over the years, the company steadily expanded, adapting to industry changes while staying committed to craftsmanship and personal service.

In 2000, Larry's son, Chad Galbreath, stepped into leadership and guided the company through its second generation of growth. Under his direction, Penn Fencing continued to invest in skilled crews, broaden its offerings, and strengthen its reputation across Western Pennsylvania.

Today, we employ nearly 60 team members and serve customers from three offices in Western Pennsylvania. Many of our materials are sourced locally, keeping dollars in the regional economy and reinforcing its deep community ties.

Why Employee Ownership Matters

The transition to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP, represents more than a structural change. It reflects a long-standing vision.

Protecting loyal employees and establishing a strong succession plan were key reasons behind the move. Employee ownership had been part of the founder's dream for years, and the ESOP model allows team members to earn ownership through company-provided stock.

That means the people answering your calls, installing your fence, and guiding you through design decisions now have a direct stake in our company's success.

Employee ownership encourages accountability, pride in workmanship, and long-term thinking. It creates stability in an industry where many family-owned businesses have been absorbed by national chains or private equity firms. Penn Fencing chose a different path, one that keeps decision-making local and focused on customers and employees, who we consider family.

Staying Competitive in a Changing Market

As big-box retailers and online sellers expanded their reach, many traditional contractors felt pressure to compete solely on price. Penn Fencing made a deliberate decision not to treat fencing as a commodity.

Instead, we invested in skilled installation crews, expanded our product lines, and focused heavily on customer service. Phones are answered by real people. Customers receive guidance from experienced professionals. Projects are completed with an emphasis on quality and professionalism.

We also ship products nationwide through our online store, so we can extend our reach without losing our local identity.

Embracing Innovation: The iDrive Power System

As part of our continued growth, Penn Fencing has adopted the iDrive Power System, an advanced fence foundation method that replaces traditional concrete installations with driven steel and aluminum posts set deep into undisturbed soil.

Unlike conventional methods that require digging holes and pouring concrete, this system drives posts directly into the ground. The result is a cleaner installation process, often completed the same day, with less disruption to the surrounding yard.

When installed to specification, the system helps resist frost heave, soil settlement, and leaning. It is also engineered for high wind resistance and is backed by a Lifetime Triple Threat Guarantee.

For homeowners and business owners alike, this technology means faster installations and long-term stability without sacrificing craftsmanship.

Recognition and Reputation

Our company's longevity is tied to core values that emphasize honesty, respect, quality workmanship, and a positive work environment. Those principles have earned our company industry recognition, including Blue Ribbon Company status from the American Fence Association and an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

These honors reflect consistent service and a long-standing commitment to doing business the right way.

Looking Ahead to the Next 50 Years

As Penn Fencing approaches its golden anniversary, we continue to invest in modern systems and tools. A new customer relationship management system has been implemented to improve communication and service, while a fully redesigned website enhances the online customer experience.

Yet despite these upgrades, the foundation remains unchanged.

For five decades, Penn Fencing has focused on quality products, fair pricing, and treating employees like family. Employee ownership ensures that this commitment continues long into the future.

In an era of consolidation and corporate buyouts, we want Penn Fencing to stand as a reminder that local leadership, shared ownership, and community-focused values still matter. As we celebrate 50 years in business, our company is not just honoring its past; it is also celebrating its future. It is building a strong and stable future for its employees, customers, and the communities it serves.
